Basics for How to Learn Guitar
If you want to learn to learn guitar, you’re certainly not alone. There are likely more people in Western civilization who want to learn guitar than there are those who want to learn any other musical instrument. The guitar has become an iconic instrument. The electric guitar is one of the most diverse instruments in the world when it comes to considering its mixture of power, effects, dynamics, and both rhythmic and melodic capabilities, making it a perfect fit to a wide array of different musical styles and genres. Today, the steel string acoustic is often used in recordings and on stage to provide contrast to the electric guitar’s sound and feel.
So, what must you do to be able to master one or more of these instruments? Let’s look at the basic, elemental methods that let you learn guitar the right way.
Always Start on an Acoustic Guitar
Even if you want to become a heavy metal god, as a beginner you must not attempt to learn guitar on an electric guitar. The electric guitar is so tempting to beginners because of its power and because from the standpoint of physical effort it is much easier to play than an acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, this physically easy playability makes the electric guitar unfit for the beginner who needs to develop strength in the hands and wrists, and who must master basics in order to sound good on any type of guitar.
By learning guitar on an acoustic instrument, you will get a more honest feedback from the instrument about how precisely you are actually picking and strumming those notes and chords. There won’t be any chorus effects or distortion to mask poor technique. You will also be forced to develop strong wrists and fingers. While this approach is clearly more difficult, you will be very happy that you knew to learn guitar first on an acoustic later on. There is no exception to the rule that playing acoustic guitar makes electric guitar playing substantially better than it would be.
Go Classical
If you learn guitar with classical technique, you will be one of the better guitar players in any other genre that you choose to play in. Classical guitar practice’s discipline and complexity will make learning any non-classical guitar music, and composing it, come faster and easier for you. Also, with classical guitar you do not use a plectrum; you only strum, play single-not melodies, play arpeggios, and and even play chords with the fingers of your picking hand. Even if you want to get into genres in which you will use a plectrum (pick) later on, such as rock music, imagine the technical advantage you will have by being able to pick two or more notes at once on non-adjacent strings, or being able to play a chord without needing to strum it (this gives it a different sound and feel).
When you learn how to play classical guitar you will also have to learn how to read music. This will deepen your musical knowledge beyond that of most of today’s non-classical guitar players who can only read tableture or play by ear. It will also give you a sound foundation should you, in the future, want to learn another musical instrument such as the piano.
Get Ear Training
As important as reading music is, to learn guitar you’ll certainly also want to memorize the “colors” of the different notes. You want to have a great idea of how something is going to sound before you actually play it or write it into a guitar song. This ear training will also let you advance in your ability to play with other musicians and, if you should want to, sing along with your guitar playing.
Spend some time with each practice session just picking a note and listening to it with intensity. Try to sing that note before you pick it; this will give you an accurate gauge on how well you have that note ingrained in your brain. Today, there’s even an ear training home study course designed to let develop perfect pitch hearing. This course is highly recommended.
Practice Diligently
If you think you’re someone special who can learn guitar without a lot of practice, think again. There is no-one who is so good that he doesn’t need to practice nearly every day of his life. As a beginner, it is advisable that you practice for just one hour a day, preferably in two 30-minute sessions, so that you don’t develop carpal tunnel syndrome. However, once your hands are strong, if you are serious about your playing you’ll want to practice for at least two hours every day. Practice diligently and you’ll learn guitar quickly!
